ZMA SOUNDS WARNING TO MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC

…………………seizes unverified scales from Yahya Investments

THE Zambia Metrology Agency(ZMA), has seized Unverified five (5) scales from Yahya Investments in Lusaka’s Buseko area, following a joint operation with the Competition and Consumers Protection Commission (CCPC) and the Lusaka City Council (LCC)

ZMA Senior Public Relations Officer, Sandra Mwila,, said this was done after a tip off from members of the public.

Ms. Mwila, said preliminary investigations indicate that Yahya investments has been pre-packaging various food products using unverified and unregistered scales among other discrepancies.

She said all scales used on the market to pre-package goods are mandated by law to be verified by ZMA adding that they should bare a certified- for use sticker.

Ms. Mwila, however stated that the team of inspectors that pounced on the company found a number of products such as tomato sauce, water, rice among other products which did not comply with the prescribed labelling and packaging including net quantity declaration.

“Where a measuring instrument is offered for sale, sold or placed on the market for use, subject to the legal metrology requirements provided for in this Act, the seller shall inform the buyer about the seller’s legal metrology requirements and status and offer the measuring instruments appropriate for the intended use”. Said Ms. Mwila.

She has since sounded a warning to members of the public to be alert and ensure all products that they purchase on the market bear the correct labeling and net quantity declaration.

ZMA is a statutory body under the Ministry of Commerce, trade and industry Industry – MCTI mandated by the Metrology Act to provide for the designation, keeping, and maintenance of national measurements measurement standards.

The Agency is also mandated to undertake certification and calibration of measuring instruments used in commercial transactions, Law enforcement, Health, Safety, and Environmental management and compliance assurance of the locally produced and imported pre- packaged commodities.

Ms. Mwila, said this in a statement issued to The Neighborhood Scoop in Lusaka today.
