The Zambia Environmental Management Agency working in close collaboration with Planet Gold Zambia , United Nations Environment Programme, Global Environment Facility has launched a project dubbed Global Opportunities for long term Development of Artisanal and Small -Scale Gold Sector.
The project is aimed at advancing efforts and commitments to reducing the use of mercury and mercury compounds in Artisanal and Small scale gold mining and processing in accordance with the provisions of the MINAMATA convention
Speaking at the launch, ZEMA Acting Director General Karen Etondo says the Agency together with Artisanal Gold Council have been funded by the Global Environment Facility through the United Nations Environment Programme to implement the project .
Mrs Etondo says the MINAMATA convention on Mercury is a global treaty whose objective is to protect human health and the environment from Anthropogenic emissions and releases of mercury and mercury compounds.
