WORLD Food Programme has released USD$3.3 million to Zambia in response to the drought that the country is experiencing.

Speaking when the World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director Cindy McCain called on him at State House today, President Hakainde Hichilema expressed gratitude for the pay out and assured the organization that money will be used for the intended purpose.

ZANIS reports that Mr Hichilema noted that the drought which the country has been experiencing is a threat to the economic growth of the country as it has affected not only the food security but also the energy security in the country.

Mr Hichilema stated that the decision to declare the drought as an emergency disaster has paved the way for other SADC countries who have emulated the move.

He assured the WFP that the pay out will be distributed evenly to the affected districts in the country and ensure the intended beneficiaries get the support they need.

And in response, Ms McCain said the organization is committed to help over one million Zambians affected by the drought.

Ms McCain disclosed that Zambia is an important partner hence the need to work together to mobilize resources and bring donors from the private sector.

She called on other stakeholders to help in raising global attention and urged the Zambian government to prepare for climate change effects in the future.

Ms McCain thanked President Hichilema for his strong leadership and good working relationship with the WFP.
