Zambezi East, Zambia – Vice President Mutale Nalumango has stressed the importance of expanding off-grid power initiatives as Zambia works toward ensuring universal electricity access by 2030.
Speaking during the commissioning of the Mpindi 60-kilowatt solar mini grid in Zambezi East, Nalumango highlighted that the K10.5 million project would provide electricity to over 300 households in the area.
“This project is a testament to our dedication to improving energy access in rural communities, which is fundamental to fostering both social and economic growth. We are determined to ensure that no Zambian is left behind as we work toward universal electricity access by 2030,” Nalumango said.
The Mpindi solar mini grid represents a significant milestone for rural electrification in Zambia and marks the 17th off-grid project launched under the United Party for National Development (UPND) government. Nalumango assured the public that the administration remains committed to advancing electrification as part of its broader development agenda.
Kenneth Muteto, a board member of the Rural Electrification Authority (REA), also addressed the event, emphasizing the mini grid’s potential to narrow the energy gap in rural areas. He pointed out that reliable electricity access would bring substantial benefits to key sectors such as education and healthcare.
“Electricity serves as a catalyst for development, and the Mpindi mini grid will enhance access to education and healthcare services in this region. This is an important step towards improving the quality of life for the people of Zambezi East,” Muteto remarked.
The Mpindi solar mini grid is a part of Zambia’s ongoing efforts to extend electricity access to its remote areas, with off-grid solar projects playing a pivotal role in reaching underserved communities. These initiatives are crucial as the country strives to meet its goal of universal electricity access by 2030.
With such projects underway, Zambia is making steady progress toward its electrification goals, helping to improve living standards, stimulate economic growth, and enhance access to essential services like education and healthcare.
