Chipata, Zambia – Three traditional leaders from the Northwestern Province of Zambia, led by Chief Mumena of the Kaonde people under the Lumwana Community Trust, recently embarked on a learning visit to COMACO.

The visit aimed to deepen their understanding of COMACO’s work and model, with strong intentions to replicate this model in the Northwestern Province.

The other two chiefs in attendance were chiefs Matebo and Mukumbi.

Chief Mumena expressed confidence in COMACO’s approach, particularly highlighting the organization’s collaborative work with communities and the tangible benefits realized from agricultural markets and carbon trade funds.

He emphasized that Zambia’s path to poverty alleviation could be paved by adopting a model like COMACO’s.

Chief Mumena urged the government to take a keen interest in understanding and implementing the COMACO model, citing its potential to protect natural resources, transform landscapes, restore soils through agroforestry and conservation agriculture, and foster community ownership of the entire process to keep their valuable natural resources safe.

“We don’t need to start from scratch; COMACO has learned from its mistakes. By adopting this model, we can develop our communities and eradicate poverty in Zambia.

COMACO has already paved the way; it’s time for us to follow suit and change our community mindsets,” said Chief Mumena.

He further expressed eagerness to replicate COMACO’s success in the Northwestern province, calling on fellow traditional leaders to visit COMACO and learn firsthand how to empower their communities economically.

He commended COMACO for its leadership and commitment to ensuring community ownership of processes.

COMACO CEO Dale Lewis welcomed the royal visit, highlighting the organization’s role in empowering farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture practices.

He emphasized the importance of knowledge-sharing and collaboration in transforming communities and building a prosperous Zambia.
