Stakeholders gather to ponder open and distance education

Experts from different sectors who include Educators, Researchers, Policymakers and industry experts are meeting at a two-day symposium being held at the University of Zambia Great East Road campus to interrogate and explore ways of bettering open and distance learning in the country.

The two-day symposium is being held under the theme: “Equitable access and inclusive learning in Open and Distance Education: Navigating Challenges, Embracing Innovation.”

Speaking when he officially opened the symposiums Education Minister, Douglas Syakalima, said the event is in line with government’s policy of providing free education.

In a speech read for him by, Education Permanent Secretary, Education Services Joel Kamoko, the Minister said he was glad that the symposium is deliberating issues to ensure that every Zambian, regardless of their circumstances, has equitable access to quality and inclusive education.

He said open and distance education has the power to transform lives and communities by breaking geographical barriers, socio-economic status, and physical ability.

The Minister said it is because of these trends that open and distance learning should not be overlooked.

He added that the open and distance provision of learning has allowed working adults to upskill and advance their careers without having to leave their jobs and families.

“My government through his Excellency the President, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, has prioritised education. This is a non-negotiable investment because it is the surest strategy to ensure that the required human capital is made available for the country.” Mr. Syakalima said.

And University of Zambia Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mundia Muya the symposium is an invaluable platform for generating strategies to develop open and distance learning.

He pointed that the symposium will also enable the public to appreciate the significant contributions open and distance learning offers.

And Dr. Beatrice Botha, Director for the Directorate of Open and Distance Education said she was impressed with the level of participation at the two day symposium taking place from 13th and 14th June
