The government says there is need to take a proactive and sustainable approach to digital future in an age where technology drives people’s lives and the demand for electronic devices is ever increasing.

Speaking during the opening of the e-waste framework and management in Zambia, Ministry of Technology and Science Permanent Secretary Dr. Brilliant Habeenzu says the rapid production and disposal of electronic devices creates an enormous burden on the environment.

He has observed that the electronic components within telecommunications equipment such as outdated trans-receivers or control systems may need proper disposal and recycling when they are no longer in use.

Dr. Habeenzu has urged telecommunication companies and infrastructure operators to implement responsible e-waste management and proper disposal to minimize their environmental impact.

And Zambia Information and Communication Technology Authority Director General Choolwe Nalubamba say there is need to develop a policy roadmap because the improper disposal of electronic waste can have serious environmental and health consequences.
