President Hakainde Hichilema has officially inaugurated the 640-kilowatt Kasanjiku Mini Hydro Power Plant, located on the Kasanjiku River in Mwinilunga District, North-Western Province. The plant, developed by the government through the Rural Electrification Authority (REA), is a key step in advancing rural electrification and fostering economic development in the region.

Speaking at the launch, President Hichilema emphasized the significant impact the hydro power plant will have on the lives of local residents. He highlighted that the plant will serve as a catalyst for economic activities, providing reliable electricity to fuel growth in sectors such as agriculture, small businesses, and local industries.

“This is a monumental step in our commitment to improving the livelihoods of the Zambian people, especially those in rural areas,” President Hichilema said. “The Kasanjiku Mini Hydro Power Plant will not only provide electricity but will also drive economic progress and create opportunities for future generations.”

The Kasanjiku Mini Hydro Power Plant, which cost $9 million to develop, is expected to provide consistent power to the surrounding communities, helping to improve access to essential services such as healthcare and education, and boosting overall living standards.

Meanwhile, residents of the Ntambu Chiefdom in Mwinilunga expressed optimism about the positive changes the plant will bring to their community. Local leaders and citizens believe the availability of electricity will stimulate business growth, attract investment, and enhance quality of life in the area.

“This power plant brings hope to our people,” said a local resident. “It will improve our businesses, make our homes safer, and open doors for more investments in our area.”

The launch of the Kasanjiku Mini Hydro Power Plant is part of the government’s broader efforts to expand electricity access in rural Zambia, which is seen as a vital component of national development. With projects like this, the government aims to reduce regional disparities and promote inclusive growth across the country.
