Lusaka, Zambia – December 28, 2024
Martin Kalumba, Project Manager for Plan International, has voiced serious concerns over the rising prevalence of child labor in rural areas of Zambia, particularly highlighting the illegal diamond mines in Chief Chamuka’s chiefdom as a major hotspot for exploitation.
Mr. Kalumba revealed that children are being sent to work in these mines instead of attending school, severely affecting their education and academic performance.
“Children should be in school, not working in dangerous and illegal mines. This is not only illegal, but it is also a violation of their rights and a direct threat to their futures,” Mr. Kalumba said during a recent press briefing.
The illegal mining activities in Chief Chamuka’s chiefdom have become a significant concern, as they continue to draw children away from their studies, depriving them of the opportunity for education and development.
In response to this growing issue, Plan International has rolled out various programs aimed at raising awareness in schools and communities about the harmful impacts of child labor.
These initiatives are designed to educate both parents and children about the importance of education and the dangers of engaging in hazardous work at a young age.
“Our programs focus on both prevention and education, ensuring that communities understand the long-term consequences of child labor. We want to give children the opportunity to grow, learn, and develop into productive members of society,” Mr. Kalumba added.
To combat the rising tide of child labor, Kalumba has called on traditional leaders in rural areas to join forces with Plan International. He emphasized the critical role these leaders play in influencing their communities and helping to shift attitudes towards child labor.
“We need the support of traditional leaders to create a united front against child labor. Their influence is vital in educating their communities and ensuring that children have the chance to attend school and build a brighter future,” Kalumba urged.
Plan International’s efforts to curb child labor come at a crucial time, as Zambia faces increasing challenges with illegal mining and the exploitation of vulnerable children.
With the help of local leaders, the organization aims to ensure that the rights of children are protected, and that their education remains a priority in rural communities across the country.
