Over three thousand people are earmarked to benefit from the emergency wetlands cropping sub programme of the Food Security Pack (FSP) programme under the Ministry of Community Development and Social Welfare in Luwingu.

District Commissioner, Chomba Chileshe, told ZANIS in an interview in Luwingu that the Department of Community Development is currently in the field conducting sensitisation meetings ahead of the programme.

Mr Chileshe said this follows the declaration of the droughts as a national disaster and emergency by President Hakainde Hichilema.

He said the emergency wetland programme is aimed at helping vulnerable households affected by either floods or droughts.

“The government has come up with interventions to help households affected by droughts and floods in the country, this is to relieve them from abject poverty,” he said.

He stated that all processes from sensitisations and enumeration will be conducted to ensure due diligence in the selection process.

Mr Chileshe said his office has engaged traditional and civic leaders on the programme so that they can encourage the people to register.

“We have engaged traditional and civic leaders who are at the grassroots level so that they can encourage people to register for this programme,” he added.
