Non-communicable diseases on the rise among children in Zambia

The National Food and Nutrition Commission of Zambia has noted with concerned that dietary related non-communicable diseases are on the rise among the children.

 Commission Deputy Executive Director Mathews Mhuru says children are being exposed to unhealthy food which could increase none communicable diseases at a tender age.

Speaking when the Commission paid a courtesy call on Ministry of  Information and Broadcasting Services Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana, Mr. Mhuru noted that in the past non communicable diseases was a lifestyle challenge that would be found in adults but currently the situation is different.

Mr. Mhuru has called for more engagement with the media to sensitize the public on the challenge that could constrain the government budget by procuring medicines for cancer and other non communicable diseases.

And Mr. Kawana says the manifesting of these diseases in young ones shows that there is a challenge with nutrition.

He has called for institutions mandated to inspect goods entering the country to enhance their inspections so that people eat the right food.
