Ministry of Health Implements Strategies to Contain Cholera Outbreak in Nakonde

Nakonde, Zambia – December 30, 2024

The Acting Minister of Health, Mr. Douglass Siakalima, has outlined the Ministry’s strategic response to the recent cholera outbreak in Nakonde District, as well as measures to prevent its spread to other regions of the country. Speaking to the media earlier today, Mr. Siakalima emphasized the Ministry’s multi-sectorial approach to managing the situation, focusing on early case identification, provision of essential supplies, and the activation of cholera treatment centers.

“As of December 2024, Nakonde has reported 13 confirmed cases of cholera. While the situation remains under control, we are taking every necessary precaution to ensure that the disease does not spread further,” Mr. Siakalima said.

One of the key measures being implemented by the Ministry is the installation of handwashing facilities and the enforcement of proper sanitation protocols at all public spaces. These efforts aim to raise hygiene standards across Nakonde and beyond, particularly in areas at high risk of cholera transmission.

In addition to these preventive actions, the Ministry of Health has secured two million doses of cholera vaccines, which will be distributed to the affected communities and at-risk areas. These vaccines are intended to provide additional protection against the disease, particularly for vulnerable populations.

Mr. Siakalima also urged the public to refrain from attempting to treat cholera at home. He highlighted the severity of the disease, noting that prompt treatment in medical facilities is essential to prevent fatalities. “Cholera is a life-threatening illness that requires immediate medical intervention. If you suspect you or someone you know may have cholera, seek medical help immediately,” he warned.

The Acting Minister further assured the public that the Ministry will continue to closely monitor the situation and work alongside local health authorities to prevent further outbreaks. He also reiterated the importance of following health guidelines to reduce the risk of cholera transmission.

As health officials remain vigilant, the Ministry of Health is encouraging all community members to adhere to hygienic practices and stay informed about the ongoing response to the cholera outbreak.
