Ministry of energy bemoans low access to electricity in rural areas

Energy Permanent Secretary Peter Mumba has bemoaned low access to electricity in rural areas.

Mr. Mumba is saddened that access to electricity in rural areas is extremely low as it currently stands at 8 percent thereby affecting development.

Speaking when he officiated at the signing ceremony of Memoranda of Understanding between the Rural Electrification Authority, Novia University, Oulu University and Copperbelt University for a project dubbed sustainable futures- biogas value chain for circular economy competence growth in Zambia, Mr Mumba says such collaborations are important to foster research and development in the electricity sub- sector.

And RuralElectrification Authority Chief Executive Officer Linus Chanda says the project will impart knowledge in renewable energy in higher learning institutions .

Meanwhile, Finnish Ambassador to Zambia Saana Halinen says the project will cost over 1 million euros.
