Fisheries and Livestock Minister Peter KAPALA says his ministry is implementing Livestock development programmes that will ensure the growth and sustainability of the sector in the country.
The Minister says the programmes are ambitiously targeting to increase cattle population in the country from 5 million in 2023 to 7 Million by the year 2027.
Engineer KAPALA said his ministry is set to achieve the targets using a number of measures that are community based and meant to support livestock farmers with high pedigree breeding stock.
He said that over 2 hundred and 25 thousand livestock have already been distributed to over 36 thousand household across the country.
He said this when he officiated at the 2024 Golden Valley Agricultural Research Trust (GART) National Pasture and Smallholder Livestock Fair and launch of the Southern Province Smallholder Dairy Farmer Empowerment Programme in Choma district.
And speaking at the same function, Choma Central Member of Parliament who is also the Minister of Information and Media Cornelius Mweetwa has urgent farmers to look after their livestock investment with care.
Mr. Mweetwa says the Southern Province Smallholder Dairy Farmer Empowerment Programme is purely meant to help reduce poverty and improve nutrition amongst the people.
