Inclusion Of Children With Autism Important- Dr Liwewe

SPECIAL Olympics Zambia Board Chairperson Mazyanga Liwewe has stressed the urgent need to reshape the narrative surrounding Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Speaking during the during the Mr and Mrs Autism Pageant Crowning in Lusaka, Dr. Liwewe observed that society has continued to unjustly misunderstand, stigmatise and overlook individuals with autism.

Dr. Liwewe stated the importance of elevating the voices and talents of those often marginalised, challenging stereotypes and dismantling barriers that hinder the full integration of individuals with autism disorder spectrum into society.

ZANIS reports that Dr Liwewe said the event will defy the common misconceptions among people proving that autistic individuals too have the potential to change the world just like anyone.

“Let us Pledge to create a world where neurodiversity is not just accepted but celebrated, a world where individuals with the autism spectrum are empowered to unleash their full potential, and where every unique gift is recognised and valued,” Dr Liwewe said.

Meanwhile, Mulenga Autism Foundation Co-Founder Joseph Kabali stated the aim of the event was to raise awareness on early intervention.

Mr Kabali explained that even when there is no cure for autism, it is important to identify the disorder earlier to begin therapy, so that the affected can have better chances of living an independent life.

And Centre for Persons with Disabilities Board Chairperson Raymond Lumbuka said the organisation is promoting talents that children with autism have, among other disabilities, in order to help parents bring them up in a normal way.

An Autism Awareness Advocate Henry Ndandalika said society has forgotten to appreciate and notice autistic people in their daily activities.

Mr Ndandalika who is also autistic stated that as long as autistic people are not included, no headways are being made.

A Caregiver Margaret Mbelenga said with time, she learnt to accept the condition of her granddaughter with autism who has made great progress in her growth.
