INSPECTOR General of Police Graphel Musamba has described allegations made by former President Edgar Lungu regarding supposed plans to ambush him at night as unfounded and false.

Mr Musamba said that at no point did the police have any intention of ambushing Mr Lungu or any other citizen.

In a statement issued, Mr Musamba said the primary concern of the police is the safety and security of all individuals, including the former President.

Mr Musamba added that as a former Head of State, Mr Lungu is entitled to protection, and the monitoring of his movements is strictly for his own safety.

“This is standard procedure and will be done with the utmost respect for his privacy and dignity. Should Mr. Lungu fail to inform us of his movements, we will still ensure his protection by monitoring his activities, as it is our duty to do so,” he said.

The IG said police security personnel currently assigned to Mr Lungu are funded by the government, adding that there are situations where the personnel may not suffice in ensuring his safety during all movements.

“Therefore, additional measures by the police are sometimes necessary to provide adequate protection. We appeal to the public to understand the role of the police in maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of all citizens,” he said.

Mr Musamba appealed for Mr Lungu’s cooperation and urged him to avoid making baseless accusations against the police for particular interests, only to seek police assistance when convenient.

Yesterday, Mr Lungu said he received information indicating that the police have opened 25 dockets against him based on formal complaints from UPND members in Lusaka.

He also alleged that the police are under instructions to arrest him by surprise in the middle of the night.
