GOVT through defense and security wings launch drought mitigation efforts

Government of the Republic of Zambia through the Defense and security wings has kick started the implementation of mitigation efforts aimed at curbing the anticipated effects of the droughts being experienced in most parts of the country.

This action is in response to the widespread drought that has affected the country and also offer a comprehensive plan to mitigate effects of drought and ensure food security for all citizens.

Minister of Defense Ambrose Lifuma was on hand to officially flag off the irrigated maize planting exercise at the Zambia National Service (ZNS) Chanyanya Farm in Kafue.

Mr. Lufuma said government remains committed to addressing the effects of droughts and prevent hunger and deprivation among the citizens.

He acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and highlighted government’s determination to counter the calamity through swift implementation of various measures.

Mr. Lufuma says the planting of irrigated maize marked the beginning of a series of interventions aimed at meeting the anticipated shortfall in this year’s national maize grain output.

The Minister noted that there is need to adopt innovative approach to increase maize production that goes beyond relying solely on the rain season.

He stated that through the use of centre pivots, the government aims to maximize crop yield and unlock the full potential of Zambia’ arable land.

And speaking at the same event, ZNS Commander Lieutenant General Maliti Solochi reaffirmed ZNS’s commitment to implementing measures that would contribute significantly to the national food basket.

General Solochi said ZNS has already commenced the planting of 100 hectares of irrigated maize using two centre pivot irrigation systems, with an additional 30 hectares earmarked for subsequent planting.

He assured that ZNS would work tirelessly to execute the directives of the president and tasks assigned by the Minister of Defense.

He further expressed gratitude to the President for the for the confidence bestowed on the military’s capabilities and pledged to diligently carry out their role in supporting government’s agenda to mitigate the effects of the drought.

The flagging off ceremony was also attended by Zambia Air Force Commander Lt Gen. Oscar Nyoni, Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba and Zambia Correctional Service Commissioner General Fredrick Chilukutu.

During the tour of the Farm, Mr. Chilukutu took time to highlight what the Zambia Correctional Service is doing as regards the production of maize.

He further assured ZNS of his support as they embark on the production of maize through centre pivot irrigation.
