Govt put policies and legislation to reduce pollution from waste

Government says it has put in place policies and legislation that are aimed at reducing pollution from waste and protection of environment.

Ministry of Green Economy and Environment Permanent Secretary Douty Chibamba says the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is one of the policies put in place in which a producer’s responsibility for a product is extended to the consumer stage of a product’s life cycle.

Dr Chibamba says statutory instrument no. 65 of 2018 provide a legal framework for extended producer responsibility relating to packaging materials, containers and other specified products.

Speaking at the first high-level consultative breakfast meeting for the implementation of the extended producer responsibility on e-waste management in Lusaka today,

Dr. Chibamba says the extended producer responsibility when fully realized will ensure that the environment is clean, green and healthy for all.

And Zambia environment Management Agency ZEMA Director General Geoffrey Mwiinga says the workshops for public and private stakeholders have been held to introduce participants to basic and key elements of e waste and the circular economy.
