FAO Celebrates Graduation of 30 Trainees from ISAVET Programme, Bolstering Veterinary Capacity in Zambia

Strengthening Animal Health and Disease Control Amidst Drought Challenges
22 October 2024, Lusaka – The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is
pleased to announce the upcoming graduation of 30 trainees from the In-Service Applied Veterinary
Epidemiology Training (ISAVET) Programme, scheduled for tomorrow, 23 October 2024, in Lusaka. This
milestone event underscores Zambia’s commitment to enhancing its capacity in veterinary epidemiology,
which is especially critical during the current drought situation affecting livestock health and food security.
The ISAVET Programme has equipped these graduates with essential skills in disease detection, reporting,
and control, vital for effective disease surveillance and monitoring in a landscape increasingly challenged
by drought-related issues. As livestock are particularly vulnerable during dry spells, having trained
professionals is crucial for early disease identification and response, ensuring the health of both animals
and the communities that rely on them for sustenance and livelihood.
Dr. Humphrey Banda, ISAVET coordinator from the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, remarked, “The
skills acquired by these graduates will play a pivotal role in safeguarding our livestock during this
challenging period. Their ability to monitor and control disease outbreaks will be instrumental in
maintaining the health of our animals, ultimately contributing to food security and public health.”
This graduation not only highlights the enhanced capabilities of veterinary professionals in Zambia but also
strengthens the country’s overall health security framework in the face of environmental stressors.
“Investing in our veterinary professionals is investing in the health of our communities and the
sustainability of our livestock sector, particularly as we confront the adverse effects of drought,”
emphasized Dr. Liywalii Mataa, Principal Veterinary Research Officer from the Ministry of Fisheries and
Livestock, National Livestock Epidemiology.
FAO Representative Ms. Suze Filippini stated that the ISAVET programme is vital in reinforcing FAO’s
commitment to building resilient health systems in Zambia. “These graduates are now part of a network of
professionals who will contribute to improved animal health and disease control, which is especially
important during periods of drought when the risk of disease outbreaks can escalate.”
The graduation ceremony will bring together stakeholders, including representatives from government
ministries, universities, and international partners, all united in their commitment to advancing Zambia’s
veterinary services and ensuring the health of its livestock
