THE Nkoka Women in Agro Business Executive Director, Nkolola Halwindi says Zambia has to put into place practical measures in its quest to adapt to climate change.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, Tuesday, Ms. Nkolola called for deliberate measures and interventions that target the emerging farmers who are below commercial farmers.

And Ms. Nkolola said the targeted approach ensures long-term agriculture sustainability as it is the second largest economy in the country that feeds and creates employment for most citizens.

Ms. Nkolola added that the emerging farmer needs support and enough knowledge must be shared as well as believe in the desires and approach that the emerging farmer is taking .

She emphasized that emerging farmers must be included in the growing of winter maize by aiding them with equipment.

“Winter maize must be in our annual planner not only when we have a drought”. She stated.

Ms. Nkolola further explained that the drought that has hit Zambia has exposed the country’s inefficiencies in the implementation of solutions to mitigate climate change.

She said there is need to empower the youth and women in agriculture as they are the future of the trend.

Ms. Nkolola said this in line with Women and Youth in Agriculture Conference, which was held on May 28th and 29th, 2024, at the Mulungushi International Conference Center in Lusaka,

The conference is held under the theme “Towards Climate Resilience and Inclusion in Agriculture for Sustainable Development,” which aims to address critical issues and opportunities within the agricultural sector, focusing on empowering women and youth.
