CTPD hosts Tobacco Taxation and Control Forum aimed at enhancing enforcement of Tobacco Control measures

CTPD today hosted a Tobacco Taxation and Control Forum aimed at enhancing enforcement of Tobacco Control measures in Zambia and dissemination of Tobacco Taxation recommendations.

The Forum drew representation from the Ministry of Health, Zambia Revenue Authority, Zambia Police Service, Drug Enforcement Commission , Lusaka City Council Public Health Department as well as Civil Society Organizations.

The Forum was an opportunity to share key messages on tobacco taxation and sensitize Law Enforcement Officers about existing Tobacco Control legislation in Zambia including regulation related to taxation, advertising, sales to minors, and smoke-free environments.

During the Forum , the Zambia Revenue Authority made a presentation focusing on the importance of tobacco taxation in reducing tobacco consumption, generating revenue for public health initiatives, and discouraging illicit trade.

The Ministry of Health also educated the stakeholders about the health risks associated with tobacco use, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory illnesses, to emphasize the importance of enforcing tobacco control measures. The ministry also emphasized the need for stakeholder support towards calling for the enactment of the Tobacco Control Bill.

And the World Health Organization encouraged the Officers and stakeholders to engage with their communities to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and the benefits of tobacco control policies, fostering public support for enforcement efforts.

The Forum resolved to strengthen collaboration in raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and the benefits of tobacco control policies.

The Tobacco Taxation and Control Forum is part of a series of activities on Tobacco Taxation being implemented under the Tobacco Taxation Advocacy in Africa a project supported by the Tax Justice Network Africa .
