Lusaka, Zambia – December 16, 2024 – A consortium of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) is calling on President Hakainde Hichilema to prioritize the enactment of the Tobacco Control Bill in 2025, highlighting the urgent need to regulate the tobacco industry and protect public health.

The group, which includes organizations such as the Centre for Trade Policy and Development, Tobacco Control Consortium of Zambia, Centre for Primary Care and Research, The Master Chimbala Foundation, Tobacco-Free Association of Zambia, and the Young Professionals Network, argues that passing the bill is critical for the future health and well-being of Zambian citizens.

Albert Phiri, Chairperson of the Tobacco Control Consortium of Zambia, stressed the importance of the bill in safeguarding future generations. He emphasized that 2025 should be a transformative year for tobacco control, building on the lessons learned in 2024 and honoring the lives lost to tobacco-related illnesses.

“We cannot afford to delay action any longer. The Tobacco Control Bill represents a critical step in curbing the health crisis caused by tobacco use,” said Phiri.

The proposed bill aims to regulate various aspects of the tobacco industry, including product manufacturing, advertising, and public smoking, with the primary goal of protecting individuals from the harmful effects of tobacco.

It also seeks to reduce the prevalence and severity of tobacco-related illnesses, which continue to take a significant toll on public health in Zambia.

The CSOs are urging the government to act swiftly, arguing that this legislation is essential not only for improving public health but also for aligning Zambia with global health standards.

They believe that by implementing strict regulations, Zambia can make meaningful progress in reducing tobacco consumption, promoting healthier lifestyles, and ultimately saving lives.

The coalition of civil society organizations is confident that President Hichilema’s leadership will be pivotal in advancing the Tobacco Control Bill in 2025, marking a new chapter in the country’s fight against tobacco-related harm.
