Minister of Justice Princess Kasune says child marriage remains a significant challenge in the SADC community as it has one of the highest global prevalence rates with an estimated 31 percent of young women and girls getting married before reaching the age of 18.
Ms Kasune says to address this ,SADC member states have been urged to domesticate the SADC model law on eradicating child marriage .
Speaking at the convening on the implementation of SADC model law on eradicating child marriage and protecting children already in marriage, The Minister said this law provides a framework for member states to adapt international standards in combating child marriage and strengthening legislation to protect children’s rights.
Speaking at the same event, Swedish Ambassador to Zambia Johan Hallenborg has urged members of parliament to drive the change that is needed to eradicate child marriage and protect those who are already affected by it.
