The Media Network Action on Climate Change has urged Government to enhance the promotion of sustainable use of the country’s wet-lands and forest eco-systems.
Zambia has today joined the rest of the world in commemorating the 2024 Wet-lands Day which falls today, under the theme, “Wet-lands and Human Wellbeing”.
Organisation Executive Coordinator Kennedy Phiri says Zambia like many other countries has committed to protect and restore wet-lands by 2030 under the United Nations sustainable development goal number six.
Mr. Phiri says the importance of restoring wet-lands cannot be over-emphasized, for instance the Lukanga Swamp a vast wet-land spanning 2,600 km supports more than 6 million people who rely on the wet-lands for their sustenance.
He has however acknowledged government and co-operating partners’ interventions to restore Lukanga and Bangweulu swamps in Central and Luapula Provinces respectively impacted by human encroachment and activities.
