CABINET has given a green light to significant reforms in the education system, as outlined in the Draft 2023 Zambia Education Curriculum Framework.

The new framework, which was approved at the Cabinet’s 10th meeting on June 4, 2024, proposes several key changes aimed at improving the country’s educational landscape.

Government’s chef spokesperson and minister responsible for information and media Cornelius Mweetwa in a press statement said among the approved changes is the reduction of Early Childhood Education from four years to three years.

He said primary education will also see a reduction from seven years to six years, while secondary education will be extended from five years to six years.

“The framework introduces Advanced Levels (A-levels) education at the Secondary Education stage, enhancing the depth of secondary education.” Said Mweetwa

He added that the restructuring includes reducing the duration of degree courses from four years to three years and the eligibility entry age into Grade 1 from seven years to six years, allowing children to start their formal education earlier.

In the same meeting, Mweetwa revealed that cabinet resolved to amend the Penal Code to reinforce laws aimed at preventing actions that incite hatred, ridicule, and division within the country.

He highlighted that the proposed amendments also seek to strengthen punishments for offences related to discrimination and sectarianism, acting as a deterrent to potential offenders.

He furthermore disclosed that cabinet approved, in principle, the introduction of a bill in Parliament to repeal the Defence Act.

“This move aims to streamline legislation concerning the Defence Force and facilitate the repeal of the Zambia National Service Act, ensuring alignment with Articles 192 and 197 of the 2016 Constitution of Zambia.” He said.
