Lundazi District in Eastern Province has recorded a 113 percent coverage in the just ended under-five vaccination exercise held in the district recently.

According to Lundazi District Health Director (DHD) Davy Wadula Zulu, the programme had initially planned to immunize 32, 556 children under five years during last month’s Child Health Week but the number shot up to 37,852 translating to 113 %.

“We targeted 32,556 children under 5 but we reached 37,852 giving us a 113% coverage,” Dr Zulu disclosed.

Dr Zulu disclosed to the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) that the June 24 to 29, 2024 Child Health Week exercise achieved 29,035 children in deworming from the targeted 26,098 translating to 108% coverage.

He added that a total of 22,068 children were fortified with Vitamin A supplement from the targeted 29,327 indicating 75% coverage.

Dr Zulu said the health personnel provided other services to the under-five children which included taking their height and weight as part of the measures to monitor the children’s growth.

He attributed the successes to the overwhelming support received from parents and guardians who turned in large numbers to have their children inoculated.

Dr Zulu encouraged parents to consider visiting health facilities even when their children were not sick for general health monitoring.
