Govt halts charcoal production in 3 districts to combat deforestation

MINISTER of Green Economy and Environment, Collins Nzovu, has announced a ban on issuing permits for charcoal production in Itezhi-Tezhi, Mumbwa, and Shibuyunji districts.

The move, effective immediately, aims to curb deforestation and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

“My Ministry has recorded increased levels of deforestation and land degradation due to illegal and massive cutting down of trees for charcoal production,” Nzovu stated in a press release.

The ban targets the preservation of the remaining trees in these drought-stricken areas. Nzovu emphasised the critical role trees play in the ecosystem, particularly as carbon sinks.

However, he expressed concern about the unsustainable tree cutting practices in Zambia.

“Activities such as degazetting of forest reserves, high encroachment levels, and high levels of illegal logging for charcoal production have a negative impact on the fight against climate change,” Nzovu explained.

The Minister warned of strict enforcement measures, including increased patrols and penalties for violators.

Individuals currently holding charcoal production permits have until May 1, 2024, to complete their operations.

“Any person who will be found manufacturing wood into charcoal for sale will be liable to a fine or imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or both,” cautioned Nzovu.
