Lusaka Province has continued to record a high number of malaria incidences with Rufunsa District topping despite a reduction in the number of deaths.

Lusaka Province Health Director Simulyamana Choonga says Malaria is among the top causes of mortality and morbidity in the province.

Dr Choonga said so far, the government has distributed 600,000 insecticide treated nets in most parts of Lusaka province as a preventive measure against Malaria.

“For Lusaka Province malaria is a bigger problem in the three of our six districts and these are Chongwe, Rufunsa and Luangwa,” he said.

Dr Choonga noted that the most affected districts are in the Eastern part of the Province.

He explained that the district with high incidents of Malaria cases is Rufunsa followed by Luangwa and Chongwe districts.

The Provincial Health Director said the government is implementing programmes aimed at eliminating malaria in the country and Lusaka province is in line with the programme.

“We didn’t distribute the nets in Lusaka District because here we used another intervention which is called Indoor Residue Spray and as a Ministry we have continued to procure drugs for Malaria control and treatment,” he said.

Dr Choonga urged the public particularly in the districts where the nets were distributed to utilize the nets for their intended purpose.
