Socialist Party President Dr. Fred M’membe says the 2026 General Elections will not be free and fair because of the shrinking democratic space.

Speaking when he hosted a delegation of the European Union Elections Follow-up Mission which is meeting stakeholders ahead of the 2026 General Election, Dr. M’membe said from the first by-elections the UPND Administration conducted in 2021, violence and other malpractices continued.

He said to date such things are deepening which if continues on the same path will be impossible to hold free and fair elections in 2026.

Dr. M’membe has disclosed that he has been a participant campaigning in the elections, adding that this is not the atmosphere under which the country can hold free and fair elections.

The Socialist Party President added that it is worrying that institutions of governance such as the Judiciary, Police and the Electoral Commission of Zambia are losing credibility.

The opposition leader has therefore revealed that Zambia and his party in particular is ready to work with the EU to maintain peace.
