Government has reaffirmed that the democratic space in the country is not shrinking but rather expanding.
Ministry of Information and Media Permanent secretary Thabo Kawana says individuals now possess greater freedom to express themselves across various platforms than ever before.
He said this inclusivity underscores government’s commitment to upholding democratic values and ensuring that voices of all citizens are heard and respected.
Speaking during the launch of the legal note on freedom of expression organized by Misa and its partners, Mr. Kawana says the government will continue encouraging constructive dialogue and engagement, recognizing the diversity of perspectives that enrich the countries democracy.
“The document not only outlines the legal procedures for civil society organisations, media outlets, journalists and lawyers on cases on freedom of expression, media freedom and digital rights but also provides practical recommendations for promoting inclusivity, combating online harassment and hate speech as well as protecting vulnerable groups from digital threats”, Kawana said.
“The Legal Note we are launching here today will serve as a comprehensive guide to navigating the complex legal frameworks governing freedom of expression and media rights in the digital sphere, said the PS.
And Misa Zambia National Director Austin Kayanda said the book highlights the legal procedures that are involved and used by the judicial players in the delivery of court judgements relating to freedom of expression, media freedom and digital rights in Zambia.
“Misa Zambia will continue to support media practitioners, human rights defenders, and citizens in general with quality information to advocate for freedom of expression and media freedoms in Zambia through the production of documents such as the one that we are” said Mr. Kayanda.
