ZIEH proposing for ban on plastic water sachets

The Zambia Institute of Environmental Health has recommended for a ban on plastic water sachets which are a major cause of drainage blockages.

ZIEH President Dr. Titus Haakonde said this has increased flooding in most communities’ result into outbreaks such as cholera.

He said the institute has also recommended to enforce stricter regulations on building plans submissions to prevent the improper site plan of sucker ways which is threatening underground water.

Dr. Haakonde was speaking during the commemoration of World Environmental Health Day themed, “Creating Resilient Communities through Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation” at Muchinga grounds in Zingalume compounds.

And gracing the occasion, Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Permanent Secretary Administration Maambo Hamaundu says government is mitigating the effects of climate change strengthening early Warning systems to prevent loss of life and Property and engaging local communities in disaster preparedness and climate adaptation.

Meanwhile, Eden University Dean of Students Nduna Mwenya says the sponsorship of the event underscores the institution commitment to fostering healthier planet for the future generation.
