The Ministry of Health has disclosed that 400 dogs have died across the country in the last month due to suspected Aflatoxin poisoning detected in mealie meal.

Speaking at a press briefing this afternoon, Minister of Health Elijah Muchima says this has been confirmed in postmortem examinations of the dogs and laboratory tests.

Dr. Muchima has also disclosed that  his ministry and other stakeholders conducted sampling of 10 milling companies with 25 samples collected and 13 samples  tested positive for Aflotoxin levels exceeding  acceptable standards.

He says seizure notices have been issued to companies with contaminated mealie  meal and some brands of the contaminated commodity have been recalled from  the market to protect the lives of the people.

Dr. Muchima has expressed concern that Aflatoxin can cause cancer, acute liver damage among others especially in children and persons with underlying conditions.

Meanwhile,  Dr. Muchima has disclosed   that government is working to ensure that volunteers  who worked during the  Cholera outbreak are employed.
